Zoo Hub, Wellington

The Wellington Zoo Hub comprises several structures and functions: the adaptive reuse of the former Elephant House into a tuck shop, a rammed earth nursery for scaly reptiles, a lightweight visitor pavilion “Kamalas” under an expressive scale like structure and a central playground.  The Kamalas pavilion was cost effective, visually effective and transformative for the Zoo for the types of events they could host.

The project was the first major project teaming Assembly Architects with Dunning Thornton structural engineer Alistair Cattanach, and fabricator Fraser Engineering.  This team would go on to other collaborations including the Showcases at Britomart.
