Located in the heart of the Wakatipu Basin, the Cottages Lake Hayes are nestled on a gentle slope overlooking the picturesque Lake Hayes, with the distant alpine panorama featuring Slope Hill to the West, the Crown Range to the East, and the majestic Remarkables to the South.
Situated adjacent to an historic Woolshed, and bounding the edge of the Threepwood Homestead, the cottage design reflects the character of its historic farm setting, with the comforts of a contemporary holiday home to create a rustic yet refined retreat.
The Cottages received an New Zealand Institute of Architects Southern Architecture Award 2021 for Small Project Architecture. The jury said:
Every aspect of this modest, sustainable and individually detailed project has been meticulously considered. Six cottages are oriented for maximum sun during the day, while maintaining lake views and privacy. Cottage interiors are efficiently planned throughout, with the living space inserted between two bedrooms, and an inviting full-width window seat joins a wood-burner and open kitchen to create an intimate and relaxed holiday atmosphere. The interior identity of each cottage is enhanced by the installation of art and furnishings by invited artists.
